Remy van Heugten is an award winning Dutch film and television director whose work rooted in contemporary, socially engaged stories and complex human relationships. Growing up in the Eastern Mining Region of Limburg, an area shaped by the rise and fall of the coal industry, he developed an early affinity for stories about people living on the margins and the forces that shape their lives. Across his work, Remy combines a strong sense of place with an intimate, character-driven approach, always searching for the human story within larger social realities.
He first gained international recognition with his feature film GLUCKAUF (SON OF MINE), which premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2015 as a Tiger Award nominee. Set in the region where Remy grew up, the film explores the troubled relationship between a father and his son against a backdrop of an impoverished region and social downfall. At the Netherlands Film Festival, GLUCKAUF received four Golden Calves, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography.
Since then, Remy has built a broad body of work across film and television. He is currently widely known for directing BASTA, which received strong critical acclaim as an exceptionally entertaining series and as a visual piece worthy of a global icon like Marco van Basten. The series won three Golden Calves (Best Drama Series, Best Director of a Drama series and
Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series). His television work also includes acclaimed drama series such as JUDAS: DAGBOEK VAN EEN GETUIGE (JUDAS: DIARY OF A WITNESS), HET A-WOORD (THE A WORD), VAN GOD LOS (GODFORSAKEN) and FEUTEN (FRESHMEN).
In 2023, his second feature film MASCOT premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in Utah. Praised for its raw and uncompromising style, the film went on to screen at festivals internationally.
Alongside his feature and television work, Remy directed the youth series HOE OVERLEEF IK? (HOW TO SURVIVE?), which received the Cinekid Kinderkast Prize and was nominated for a Rose d’Or. His earlier work includes the television film WITTE VIS (WHITE FISH), WILLEMSPARK and the short film SHAHRAM & ABBAS.
Remy graduated from the Higher School of Arts in Genk, Belgium, in 2000 and from the Netherlands Film Academy in Amsterdam in 2004. His graduation film ABOUT ROSES received several international awards and was nominated for a Student Academy Award.
